A stand-alone health library.
This year heralded the arrival of alive’s most extensive publishing venture to date.   "The Encyclopedia of Natural Healing," a monumental undertaking five years in the making, shows off the combined efforts of alive’s international research team of more  than 50 health professionals and its editorial staff.

The Encyclopedia is a stand-alone natural health library. Yet, for all the information it contains, the Encyclopedia is not overwhelming. The main goal of the Encyclopedia is to help people take charge of their own wellness.
More than a mere compendium of facts, it’s easy to read with color photographs and illustrations on every page.

The first section of the Encyclopedia introduces principles of natural health and natural remedies with a historical perspective of natural health pioneers from both Europe and North America. Another section is devoted to the lifestyle issues and choices we face in making our personal environment healthier. Various body systems are clearly explained, as are the principles of nutrition, sources of essential nutrients and recipes for optimal nutrition. There’s a whole section devoted to questions about nutritional supplements. Much attention is given to herbs, homeopathy, external healing methods and more than a dozen other natural healing processes.

Most of the book is dedicated to treatments for particular ailments and conditions. There are at least
300 listings. For each ailment you’ll find explanations of various natural treatments and applications
for self-help. You’ll find out about treatments you never knew existed.

Attaining a healthy body, mind and spirit is a continuous and enjoyable lifelong journey. By taking
hold of this book and the power of healing it represents, you are making a most important step
towards excellent health and wellness.

Dr. Harold HP Dressler (hhpdressler@pacificcoast.net) from Sooke, BC, Canada ,

One-stop natural health information.
An extraordinary, splendid production of alive Publishing is the "Encyclopedia of Natural Healing,"
1997 (second printing 1998). The immediate impression is that this book must have been produced
by bibliophiles who have poured their admiration for high-quality books into their production:
colorful binding, first-class paper, romantic, picturesque and informative color photos, encyclopedic
format; it looks and feels like something substantial yet beautiful. No wonder that it received the
Benjamin Franklin Award for 1998 as best book of the year!

Much more important for the consumer, however, is the fact that the Encyclopedia surely must be
the first of its kind on the market! Having had access to and having read a great variety of books on
natural health, I have never come across such a wealth of information on this topic. Leafing through
it rather carefully, I found it remarkable in our times that such an encyclopedia could have been
produced without yielding to the pressure of the New Age proponents and related esoteria!
Consequently, this book represents the very best in its field from the “basic principles of the natural
health philosophy”, a “history of natural health” (from Hippocrates, Paracelsus, Kneipp,
Schoenenberger, to mention only a few, to the pioneers of North America), a section on “healthy
living space” (discussing many environmental topics, among them organic gardening, a home remedy
chest and natural insecticides) to careful research on body systems, nutrition, nutritional
supplements, healing herbs, homeopathy, tissue salts and other natural healing methods such as
acupuncture, chelation, chiropractic and magnetic therapy.

If one wishes to be informed in a systematic, precise yet easy to understand way, the choice must
certainly be this encyclopedia as it offers not only the main section of health problems from A-Z
(with careful instructions on how to use nutrition, herbal remedies, homeopathy, tissue salts and
external/physical therapies) but also concludes with seven appendices which list resource material, a
list of medical plants in Latin, English, French, German and Chinese, a glossary of medical terms and
references. Spas around the world, an extensive index and measurement conversion tables. All this
allows the reader to understand how to self-diagnose any of the over 300 health conditions
described and to find a natural treatment for herself without having to rely on a visit to her doctor.
Particularly delightful are the excellent color photos which underline, explain and generally enhance
the appearance of this volume.

I cannot think of a better gift for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas. The
"Encyclopedia of Natural Healing" not only pleases the eye but also informs the mind and offers help
and advice in this important area of our life: our health.

GREAT book for beginning raw foodists!
I love this book in that it gives me a lot of good ideas on what direction to take my creativity. It has
a lot of recipes for great soups and great sauces and dressings. A must for beginning raw foodists!

A recipe book for every kitchen.
The very first thing you will notice about this book is the absolute beauty of the photographs.
Edmond Fong captured the smell and taste of the food featured on every page.

After reading and testing recipes, I have found this book to be a must for every cook of every level
of food savvy. Anyone would be able to prepare these recipes and the ingredients are readily
available in most grocery and/or health food stores. The level of preparation runs from beginner to
the gourmet.

This is the book we use for entertaining our friends and neighbors. The teenagers even like to
browse through the photos and pick out something to prepare.

"The Raw Gourmet" is truly the recipe and instruction book for the cook who wants to impress
friends or the food preparer who wants to help her/his family make dietary changes to become
healthy and happy.

A reader , June 25, 1999
A MUST BUY for any rawies or wanna be rawies!
This book has the most wonder recipes that are sure to get anyone on the right track to raw foods.
The tone is warm and friendly and you feel like a guest in her home. There is a chart on sprouting,
and many other wonderful resources. She opens up with info you can't miss. Read it first (I know
you want to get to the recipes first, so did I)

Now let's get down to business:

There is not one recipe that didn't make my mouth water. From the almond milk to the zucchini
pasta. The raw Nori roll are the most delicious. The sinfully, scrumptious sunburger is a keeper, and
the pizza's are made to perfection.

Soups and salads are simple yet flavorful. Don't miss the Hijiki & sweet potato medley it's a
calicum/vitamin packed treat. There are many colorful recipes to brighten up your diet and satisfy
your palate.

The deserts are to die for. If you love sweet treats without all the fat and artificial ingredients you are
going to be in heaven. The apple pie is better than the one your mother used to make and definetly
better for you. The sweet potatoe pie will knock your socks off as well as give your stomach a rest.
No butter and cream needed here this is the real deal without the guilt.

What more can I say but BUY THIS BOOK! You won't be disappointed!
